International Overdose Awareness Day aims to raise awareness that the tragedy of overdose death is preventable. It will also mark 139 days since the Province of British Columbia declared a public health emergency over the rate of overdose in BC. The most recent Coroner's report (August 10th, 2016) states that approximately 200 people have died from overdose since the announcement of the public health emergency. In honour of International Overdose Awareness Day, Yes2SCS will be hosting a Community Candlelight Vigil. Please join us on Wednesday, August 31st at 7:30pm at Centennial Square to commemorate the lives we have lost to preventable overdose deaths. All are welcome to attend. Food and juice will be available free of charge. Candles will also be provided. Following a moment of silence, speakers will include Leslie Mcbain (Moms Stop the Harm), Katie Lacroix (Chair of the Board of the Society of Living Illicit Drug Users - SOLID), Bernice M Kamano (Aboriginal Coalition to End Homelessness Society) and Peer Advisory Committee Members fromYes2SCS. Please spread the word - like, share, and post widely! For more information about other events happening across the world, please visit http://www.overdoseday.com/.
